Friday Sermon: Who is a Man? – Gaddafi National Mosque

Understanding Manhood in Islam

Respected brothers and sisters in Islam, in today’s society, the question “Who is a man?” has become more relevant than ever. Many assume that manhood is defined by physical strength, wealth, or societal status, but Islam presents a different perspective. In our Friday sermon at Gaddafi National Mosque, we delved deep into the qualities that define a true man in the sight of Allah.

The Distinction Between Being Male and Being a Man

One of the core points of discussion was the difference between being a male and being a man. In modern times, people can claim manhood merely based on thoughts and feelings, without the responsibilities that come with it. Islam, however, sets clear distinctions between biological masculinity and true manhood.

The Responsibilities of a Man in Islam

Allah has given men a degree of responsibility over those under their care. This, however, is not a privilege for oppression, but rather a duty to provide and protect. A man in Islam is one who:

  1. Takes Responsibility – A true man provides for his family, not just financially but emotionally and spiritually. Provision is a key attribute of a man, and those who neglect their responsibilities fail in their role as men.
  2. Minds About His People – A man must be aware of what is happening in the lives of his wife, children, and dependents. Ignorance of their needs and struggles is a sign of negligence, not manhood.
  3. Exercises Self-Control – Islam teaches that a true man is not one who overpowers others in wrestling or arguments but rather one who controls his anger. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized that strength is in self-discipline, not in physical dominance.

The Misconceptions About Manhood

Society today often equates manhood with financial success. Many judge men based on their income levels, assuming that wealth is the primary indicator of masculinity. However, Islam does not define a man by his earnings but by his discipline and sense of responsibility. A man can still fulfill his duty even if he is poor, as long as he remains committed to his family and responsibilities.

A Call to Preserve True Manhood

Unfortunately, some individuals tarnish the image of manhood by abandoning their responsibilities, mistreating women, or manipulating those under their care. To such individuals, this sermon serves as a reminder: real men uphold the principles of Islam and live by the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Those who fail to meet this standard should reform and strive to be the men that Allah and His Messenger will be proud of.

Conclusion

To every responsible man out there, know that your efforts do not go unnoticed. Allah is aware of your struggles and sacrifices. Continue to be a man not because of societal expectations but because it is a duty that brings you closer to Allah. May we all strive to embody the true essence of manhood as defined by Islam.

May Allah guide us all on the right path. Ameen.
